As a "quick fix", your best bet may be to run ZapMessenger:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/zapmessenger.asp
And then install the latest released version by downloading and running the following MSI
(Microsoft Installer) file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp
Hopefully after that you'll be good to go and you'll find Messenger under the Windows Live
section of the Start menu.
