Hi there,

I am using a Viewsonic Pocket PC (it's older.. I think a V35).

I had Outlook/Office 2000 installed at work and I have Outlook/Office 2003
at home.

Desktop refresh just rolled through yesterday and upgraded my work PC to
Outlook/Office 2003, but I was away sick so wasn't able to nail them down and
make sure everything worked!

I can no longer sync my PDA and am getting a number of errors.
First is:
“Microsoft Outlook is no longer installed, so ActiveSync cannot continue to
run. To continue synchronization, reinstall Microsoft Outlook. If you no
longer want to synchronize your data, disable synchronization in ActiveSync.”

Second is:
“Synchronization cannot be started because you are not to log on to the
network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and
synchronize again. If the problem persists, contact your network
administrator.”

Third is:
“Items of one or more information types cannot be synchronized. Disconnect
and reconnect your device.
To view all error messages and dialog boxes that require your input, you
must connect to this computer via infrared or serial/USB cable.”

I am hoping to get a clear idea of the solution I need to pursue, as if I
have to get Outlook re-installed in this process, I will have to involve
either the desktop refresh and/or helpdesk groups.

I have Outlook 2003 at home and it works fine... so it can't be an
incompatibility issue. I also tried re-installing ActiveSync 3.7.1.

I also tried installing ActiveSync 3.8 as it seemed from the various threads
I was seeing on similar problems that this might be required for Outlook
2003, but again since it works on the home PC, the only thing I can think is
it is an installation order issue, but want to be really sure as helpdesk
doesn't actually support my PDA and I want to make sure of what I am asking
them to do from a install/re-install perspective.

Thanks in advance!
M.

Hi,
Did you upgrade ActiveSync to 3.7.1 or later? This is the first release to
support Outlook 2003. Also, anytime you upgrade Outlook you must reinstall
ActiveSync.

Chris,

Thanks for your reply!

I was running ActiveSync 3.7.1 and Outlook 2000 (w/NO problems) before the
desktop refresh dudes rolled through, but since I was away when they did my
computer... they didn't really bother to ensure all my s/w, etc was running,
settings where restored, etc.. I.e. didn't even restore my DB connections..
anyway.. I'll start ranting if I continue..

So, first thing I did when I realized I couldn't sync was to re-install
ActiveSync 3.7.1 (over the exisiting - solution I got from reading on some
other newsgroups) and then that didn't work, so I un-installed ActiveSync
3.7.1 then re-installed it.

Still no joy... so I'm guessing I need an Outlook 2003 re-install, then
re-do ActiveSync 3.7.1 again.. but since I have to get the desktop refresh
gang down to do the Outlook install, and they are not the friendliest group
(likely b/c they are currently fixing ALOT of mistakes they have made, and
have a lot of people annoyed at them), I want to be REALLY clear on what they
will need to do..

I.e. I can't re-install Outlook 2003 myself, at least as far as I am aware
of... I have admin rights on my computer b/c I do DB, s/w, web app.
design/dev, so they have to give me local rights so I can do my job... but I
don't have access/permissions to the app. download paths/servers.

I hope that makes some sense... I may just have them come back & be
responsible so my computer is exactly how I left it before they rolled in.

Thanks.

Hi,
I understand. The only things I can think of is to try ActiveSync 3.8 and
also try Detect & Repair of Outlook. For the Detect & Repair you need the
Outlook 2003 cd though.

The problem with the deployment is that ActiveSync adjusts to the specific
version of Outlook that is installed on the PC at the time it is installed.
It doesn't adjust to new releases without reinstallation.

Chris,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Sorry.. I missed one piece of information. I actually tried installing
ActiveSync 3.8 as well, as the last ActiveSync 3.7.1 didn't work. I am aware
of the Detect & Repair oprtion for Outlook. I will try that route and see
what happens.. bascially the desktop guys are going to have to be responsible
for getting my computer back to how it was... just means wasted days not
working...

Thanks for your help. If you have any other suggestions let me know.

Thanks.
