When I open WLM located at C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger,

I get the Windows Installer windos, followed by

The installer has encountered an unexpected error
installing this package. This may indicate a problem with
this package. The error code is 2771.

How to resolve this problem?

Do a repair?

Running WinXP SP3

Greetings,

A repair might work, depending on what exactly the component is that it thinks is broken.
Also a full uninstall/reinstall of Messenger might do it.

Falling that, there are some other options but slightly more complicated (and hopefully not
required).

I did the beta SP3 update on various machines and on all of them LiveMessenger
decided to reinstall. On most machines this was successfull, but on some I got
MSI after each reboot trying to update/repair. This failed. It needed a
complete uninstall (making sure the complete directory was gone too), followed
by a regular download and install, to make the problem go away; but it is gone
now!
