I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2, but upon restarting I got the blue
screen error message 'The application has failed because winsrv was not
found. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem.' I am not sure
what to do from here. The microsoft website offers some suggestions, but
they tend to deal with complications related to TVMedia, a program which is
not on my computer.

Rebooting in Safe Mode or Last Good Configuation (after pressing F8 to stop
the looping) yields nothing. I was thinking of using the Restore CD's which
came with the computer and selecting the Non-destructive system recovery
option. Is this a good idea? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

When I select either safe mode or safe mode with command prompt, then select
WinXP Prof Edition, I get a long listing of this:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System 32\DRIVERS\and a variety
of .sys files
There is no prompt as I am used to seeing in DOS. After a minute, it begins
to loop around again -- BIOS page, info page, attempt at windows start-up and
error message. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Kacy

The long listing is normal ... Safe Mode always operates in Verbose mode
when used. It's just telling you what drivers are being loaded.

Is mup.sys the last .sys to display?

mup.sys is the 5th from last displayed. The final 4 are agp440.sys,
alim1541, amdagp, and agpCPQ. What do you think?

I really hope this helps ... found this based on your last information:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;324764

Basically, it states a problem with agp440.sys and a solution and steps to
follow using the Windows XP CD Recovery mode.

It sounds like MS overwrote your motherboard video chipset driver. After
you solve this, you may want to contact your PC Manufacturer and/or
Motherboard Chipset web-site.

I had to find a WindowsXP CD in order to follow the directions detailed in
the referenced article. I was not able to find one, so I just went ahead and
used the Restore DVD that came with the computer. Even though I used the
non-destructive option, I still lost programs, files, etc. I was able to
download SP2 without incident and reload all my programs and files. I'm all
up-to-date now, but it has taken so much time! I really appreciate all your
help. I have learned alot in the process and hopefully it will put me in
good shape for any future problem. Thank you again!
