When I open Defender it is showing me that I haven't updated the definitions
in 16 days. This has been happening for a couple of weeks now, even after I
click on the check for updates and it gives me a mssg that windows defender
is up to date with new definitions and engine upgrades. I have also tried to
go on the microsoft updates website and have downloaded and installed
definition update 1.14.1315.1 for Beta windows defender (KB915597) about 40
or more times.

Now I get the error message -> 0x80240016 when I try to instal the update
from the website, while checking for updates through defender.

So what it looks like is that I can dowload and instal the update but
windows defender won't accept it as installed, and therefor I have to instal
it over, and over, and over... well you get the picture... again.

I have run numerous virus scans and cleaned out my registry, as well as
cleaned out all caches and cookies... nothing seems to work.

I spoke with tech support and still no help...
I read all the other comments posted on here, about the same problem someone
had in December. It looks like I'm having the same one 3 months later... so
someone Help!

Thanks I.

So it's day 17, and defender still won't intall updates. Today I got the
error mssg saying "Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x8050800f. An
unexpected problem occured. Instal any available updates and then try to
start the program again." Well I did that, and it still didn't help. I'm
still getting the windows is up to date mssg, and then the 0x80240016 mssg
when I try to intal from microsoft updates and defender at once.

I am also having this problem.

Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 18 days..

Have manually updated a dozen times, and WD says downloads complete,
WD is now up-to-date. BUT, problem persists.

AND WD shows in the tray ALL THE TIME, with at little orange exclamation mark!

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1186.0
Signature Version: 1.13.1286.1

I had the same problem and solved it by following the Resolution for a
similar problem at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105 , ie:

1. Start, click Run, type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C},
to uninstall the current update.

2. Update Windows Defender manually, under Help, About Windows Defender.

Hope this helps...

Well this did not do it for me at all !
but after all it is a "BETA" program ! - altough youd think someone notice
this at the alpha stage , besides this was bought from existing code of a
much older and stable product.!

What you may try is:

Look for the the "AS-Sigs.MSI" file in the program folder where you've
installed the Beta(!) of Windows Defender into.

Click the file with the right mouse button and choose "uninstall".

Reboot (shut down and restart) Windows and revisit the Windows Update
site once again.

I'm assuming you're running the latest BETA build of Windows Defender
already (build 1051). To check whether that's true, have a look onto
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...ckversion.mspx
Otherwise unsinstall your current build of Windows Defender via
"Software" in the Control Panel and download and install the actual
build:

yes I am running (build 1051) . The uninstall program you mention is not in
the install folder (I just downloaded the latest posted version so MS may
have removed that)
I used Windows Install Clear Up and did athought clean up of the registry
deleting the unfamous
{A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} key anually and did a reinstall.
All seems to be woring with the exception that Defender doesnt show on the
system tray anymore but reading about this on their web page it seems to be
by design and wil only show if it encounters a problem. This is a bit
disconcerting since I'd like to know the THING IS LOADED !
(as annoying as that wall with the exclmation mark was - it DID tell me
something)
Apparenty they are juts playing around with usability because as a matter of
fact I dont see any manual way of updtaing the program engine nor the
definitions !

Hi, in addition to what HForcelledo said I also deleted the following folders
before the reinstall,

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender
C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
Defender

Everything working fine now!
