Hi Sheila,

Give this a try and see if it solves the problem..............

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER, wait a few seconds, then click on OK in the
RegSvr32 dialogue box.
Now, open the registry editor (Start>Run key in regedit then click on OK or
hit ENTER)
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv
Look for a DeleteFlag value and, if it exists, right-click on it and select
Delete.

Now see if if you can successfully update.
If not, then:

Go to Start>Run and key in:
net stop wuauserv
Then click on OK or hit ENTER
When the Automatic Updates service has stopped, use My Computer or Windows
Explorer to navigate to the C:\Windows or C:\WINNT (if C:\Windows does not
exist) folder. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SDOLD
Go to Start>Run and key in:
net start wuauserv
Then click on OK or hit ENTER

Now try the Windows Update site and see if the error has been resolved.

I have the same problem, but do not have a DeleteFlag value in the
registry. So, I tried to direct the auto update to stop and to rename
the Software Distribution folder "old", but none of that worked. The
auto update service is stuck in stopping mode, meaning that the
Software Distribution folder is in use and cannot be renamed. Is there
a workaround here?

Hi enicar,

Try the following, posted by Torgeir Bakken (MVP), to reinstall the
AutoUpdate Service:

I tried Torgeir Bakken's recommendation, but the reinstallation o
AutoUpdate isn't taking. The update service isn't showing up in th
registry. Any ideas

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER, wait a few seconds, then click on OK in the
RegSvr32 dialogue box.

After performing the above, does wuauserv appear in the registry?

Patti: Thanks. I followed another recommendation from Torgeir (entered
the specific dlls for the update service) and that got auto update back
in the registry. However, when I tried to run Microsoft Update after
doing this, I was able to get into the scan, but then it converted to
an access denied message. I managed to stop the auto update service in
order to rename the Software Distribution folder "old," but I still got
blocked from renaming because it is being used by another service (or
least I'm surmising that's the case). Any further thoughts?
