error number 0x800040005

this error is showing up when i try to do a windows update. i do try to do
the update and restart pc as instructed but this error still remains, what
do i do? It also won't let me get into any of my emails.

0x800040005 is not a valid error code, I assume you mean 0x80004005.

If you have a Windows XP computer:

KB843499 mentions 0x8004005, I wonder if that is a typo for 0x80004005.

"Error: 0x8004005" or "Error: 0x800C0005" error messages when you
scan for updates

Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to try the steps in KB843499, using
regsvr32.exe to register Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, and Initpki.dll.
