Hello,

While recently reformatting my computer I had reinstalled Windows XP Pro
(SP1) and have been trying to update to SP2. I have been able to download and
install all of the prior updates up until I recieved the error [Error number:
0x80004005] on the Windows Update/Microsoft Update pages.
The error does not give any links or options for any direct fixes, so I am
asking here.

Thanks

I. Installing SP2

1. Download from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a,
saving the installer to your desktop.

2. Review tips here prior to installing: http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=45

Tip: Disable your anti-virus application & any anti-spyware applications
before installing SP2. If ZoneAlarm (any version) is installed, uninstall
it.

II. Getting Windows Update to work

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

Direct Download links:

x86-based versions of Windows (most users)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

x64-based versions of Windows
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

Itanium-based versions of Windows
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...ent30-ia64.exe

2. Now install this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

3. Reboot.

Tip: Do NOT install IE7 via Windows Update/Automatic Updates!

III. Enable and Configure Automatic Updates

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

First of all thank you for the responce, but for some reason when Installing
the SP2, it comes up with an internal error. I have tried three times now
with no progress. The wizard goes through the cofiguration check, makes a
list of the drivers, creates an invintory, and checks the validity, then
crashes with an internal error.

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

And the error would be...?

Immediately after the format & reinstall, did you (1) enable the Windows
Firewall and or a third-party firewall and (2) install, properly configure
and manually update an anti-virus application before otherwise connecting to
the internet to do anything else (e.g., browse; check email; chat)?

Did you review those tips and install as recommended?

Go to start/run, and type regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll

Click OK, then type, regsvr32.exe licdll.dll and click OK.

Retry updates.
