I used my pre-SP1 Microsoft Windows XP CD to repair windows (After a SPYAXE
attack... Ahhh... whole nother story!!!). Now I am getting this error when I
try to run windows update (Error number: 0x80070005). How can I
update/repair back to SP1 and SP2?

See if this helps

**/Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an
"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied" error message is logged to the
Windows Update.log file

Hi,

I had a similar experience after a Repair Install. This usually is a
Permissions issue, but tweaking Perms on related folders and reg keys
didn't do the job for me. I was fortunately able to circumvent the problem
and install all available updates notwithstanding.

This is however less than satisfying... Although I was certainly aware of
article 836926, and have been looking for it, unfortunately the link is no
longer valid.
In case anyone has a copy saved, I'd be most interested!

Thanks!

opps!.... thanks for the advice! :-P
I have found a kb article in which talk about the error code 0x80070005
http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=kb;ja;875558

buuuut.... is in japanese, translated to english is something like:

- ----
When searching for available updates on the Update site, you see the
0x800A01AD error while looking for updates

Problem description
This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the
Windows Update registry keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read
errors 0x80070005 and 0x80080005.

Applicable operating systems

a.. Windows XP

b.. Windows Server 2003

Resolutions
1. Check permissions on the Windows Update registry key
1.. Click Start.
2.. Choose Run.
3.. In the Run box, type REGEDIT.
4.. Click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
*WARNING*
Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
5.. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate.
6.. On the menu, click Edit. Click Permissions.
7.. For Administrator and System, select the Allow check boxes next
to Full Control and Read permissions. NOTE: In certain instances, these
check boxes are grayed out. Ensure all accounts have appropriate
permissions.
8.. Click Apply.
9.. Click OK.
10.. Close the Registry Editor.
11.. Restart the system.
- --------------------------
but is posible that other registry keys than the one mentioned in the
article above also can have permission issues
Other way is restoring the default permissions in the system typing this
command (start /run /cmd.exe)

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose
