0x80070017 ERROR_CRC Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Remove all contents of the WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download folder.
Empty the Recyle Bin

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel.
On the first page, General, click the 'Delete Files' button; put a check
in the box next to ' Delete all offline content '
Click OK. Click OK once more.

Retry WU.

I tried to remove all contents of the download file but 1) there were no
contents and 2) when I tried to open it I received a "Disk is not formatted.
The disk in drive C is not formatted. Do you want to format ? Yes or No" I
selected "No" of course because this is my hard drive.
I am able to do the other items on the list you mentioned, and the windows
update still returns the same message.

So tell me straight, am I in big trouble ?

Can't say definitively, but it sounds as though there is an issue with
the Hard Drive. Suggest you backup whatever data you can not afford to
lose ASAP.
Then visit the manufacturer of the HDs web site and obtain any
diagnostic tool they offer. Analyze the HD. If it comes up OK, then
suggest it *may* just need to be defragmented.
At least, that's what I hope for your sake.
