error number 0x80070057

I have the same problem as jeffrey g;having gone thro check list as suggested
by microsoft,im at a loss as to what the parameter setting is & how to input
it.My o/s is xp home edition.all i'm trying to do is download updates,has
anybody got a solution to my problem?
