One day my sound just stopped. When I try to play music, it tell me that
Windows Media Player encountered a problem. My laptop isn't playing any
sounds from anything. It's completely silent. It's told me a few times that
there's problems with the sound device. I thought maybe I needed to download
something, but it tells me that I no longer have the correct software needed
for updates. What do I do?

Just what is it that's telling you that 'I no longer have the correct
software needed for updates' ?
Suggest you download the Windows Update Agent:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Save it, do NOT run it, Close the browser and then run
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
If you get a message that the Update Agent is already installed, then go
to Start > Run > click the Browser button
Navigate to where WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe is located and click on
it. Click the Open button
At the Open: line, click once on WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
It should be highlighted in blue
Click right after the last quotation mark "
Push the Space Bar on the keyboard and type in

/wuforce
The command should now look like this

"C:\<wherethefileislocated>\WindowsUpdateAgent 30-x86.exe" /wuforce

Click OK or press Enter

For the sound issue, right click My Computer either on the Desktop or on
the Start Menu.
LEFT click Manage
Click on Device Manager in the left frame
In the right frame, click the plus sign next to 'Sound, video and game
controllers' [IF there is an issue with an item listed then the right
frame *should* already have been expanded and the problematic device
should have a question or exclamation point showing on it]
Double click on any device that's showing as having an issue
IF there are none, then DOUBLE click on the sound device that is
installed on the system.
In either case, now click the Driver tab
Click the Roll Back Driver button and follow the prompts
