ok, this is doing my head in now... searched all over the net for a fix for
this with no avail... seen it mentioned in a few places, tried all kinds of
things including all the usual fixes, uninstalling and re-installing I.E...
selective starup so that nothing is running ather than essential services
when I connect to windows update... doing the start >run>selection of dll
files thing I`ve seen in a few places..
I`ve never had a problem before, but I`ve just re-installed windows and now
this?
does anyone know anything? it amazes me that microsoft dont seem to have a
clue!

I got around this error by starting the BITS service and the COM+ Event
System which BITS depends on. I think the error was caused on my system
because COM+ Event System had been disabled.

If you have the same problem, try Start->Run...->services.msc then start
Background Intelligent File Manager and COM+ Event System. You'll first have
to change COM+ properties so startup type is manual (or automatic), not
disabled.

hi, thanks for trying to help - I actually fixed the problem in the end by
doing a clean install of windows again... far from the ideal solution!
