I had the same problem and found out that I had disabled
the active-x component 'Windows messenger'.
- in internet explorer choose 'Extra', Manage add-ins
- activate 'Windows messenger'

It worked with me

I've recently learned that this came with Windows XP SP2.
So, if you have installed SP2, you can find 'Manage Add-ons'
in the Internet Explorer menu, 'Extra', the 3rd item.
This tool lets you enable or disable Active-X add-ons.
I had the 'Windows Messenger' add-omn disabled and after enabling it
and a restart of Internet explorer the update worked.

Hope this is clear enough.
