After the new version of the Windows Update software downloads and installs,
I am given my choice of updates only to endup with Error number: 0x80072EFD.
I have tried the previous posts of moving the WU*.dll and .exe's. I have
tried the post about running the 6 or so commands from the "Start - Run" and
even rebooting, only to have the Windows Update software re-install and still
give me the same error message. Help!

Hi

Some trouble shooting step for error 0x80072EFD here (I would think
the most likely cause for your error is a Proxy/Firewall configuration
error):

When accessing the Windows Update site, you receive the 0x80072EFD error.

You should also try the steps here:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.

You might need to use proxycfg.exe (see link above) to either set
or remove a proxy server configuration:

Open a command prompt (Start/Run and then "cmd.exe" without the
quotes").

Run this command to see what proxy configuration WU uses:

proxycfg

If you don't have a proxy, you will need status

Direct access (no proxy server).

If it reports anything else, to set direct access:

proxycfg -d

To get more help on proxycfg:

proxycfg -?

Please report back any finding, good or bad :-)

Do you have Norton Internet Security installed?, If so open NIS and click
personal firewall and then click configure. Once your personal firewall is
opened, click the program control button and scroll down for "microsoft
generic host process for win32 services" in the manual program control.
Change the selection to either automatic or permit all and windows update
should now work when you retry. Good luck.
