there. I could be wrong but dont think it does. now since windows update ok
on my other pcs I am wondering if its the pc I am using now but after seeing
your problem and many others in the newsgroup I am at a lost.

Hi,

I have this problem as well -- The green bars will run back & forth for a
few seconds then I'm taken to a page where I get the error "0x80072EFD" ...
Microsoft Update has always worked fine till today and I also think it has
something to do with Microsoft Defender, which I'd installed about an hour
before I realized I had this problem. All was perfectly fine with MU
[Microsoft Update] beforehand.
So far I've tried *everything* Microsoft suggests after getting this error,
including checking my HOSTS file [found nothing there that needed to be fixed
per the directions] I made sure the necessary sites were listed in my
"Trusted Sites" [They were already there] and I disabled my Firewall,
enabling the Windows firewall [as told] then tried to access MU again, but I
still got the same error message.

I'd planned on installing Defender, but today MS Antispyware let me know
updates were available ... I knew it would be Defender, so I did the
upgrade/update. After I installed it, it told me I needed to update Defender
as the definitions were more than 100 days old, so I clicked the Update
button and waited ... nothing happened. Tried again and again, still
nothing, so I decided to restart the computer and try again. It still
wouldn't update so I wound up at the forums looking for Defender help and
have since spent hours looking in different areas for a solution, to no
avail. There was one suggestion in the "Defender Installation" area for
people that couldn't get Defender to update -- someone said if you go to MU,
it should be listed as an optional update as it was for him, so I went to
try that -- that's when I discovered that MU won't work. I finally did a
search for the error message MU gives me and wound up here. I read all the
most recent posts [from late '05 to '06] and then some older ones hoping to
find help, then finally found this one, which sounded like my problem: MU
stopped working after installing Defender.
I used MU just 3 days ago and all was fine ... nothing has changed since
then except installing Defender, so the only thing I can think of [since that
won't update either] is Defender has got something to do with it! I don't
know what to do from here ... there's an option to get help with a link when
looking at the possible solutions, saying that there is no-cost help for a MU
problem, but I haven't gone that route yet & have no idea what kind of help
will be offered -- Live chat? Email help? Remote help?? Not sure if it'll
really even be "free" in the end lol so I thought I'd try to solve this
myself but haven't been able to do so.

If anyone has had the same or similar problem which has been resolved, could
you please, please, PLEASE post here to let us know?? I'd/we'd be soooooooo
very grateful for any help at all! Thanks so much for taking the time to
read this looooong post lol ... I just thought it best to explain everything
so whoever reads this knows all the facts.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Since the system can not access MU since the latest version of Windows
Defender was offered as an update, then it's related to that specific
update and there is *no charge* to have this resolved by MS.
There *use to be* a phone number to contact MS on the page below, but
apparently it's no longer listed. Email support, for the U.S., is
available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=6527

Have you tried the steps laid out here for Windows Defender definition
update issues ? : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105
