Click tools , Internet options, Connections, Lan settings, uncheck
Automatically detect settings, uncheck automatic configuration script, click
ok, and ok again to close. Then try automatic updates.

"Miser"; your solution did Not remedy the problem. The culprit in the error,
has to do with either the new version (V6) of MS Windows Update or the newer
version of 650dialup's Netrocket - an accelerator program for dialup - which
also interferes with Windows Update. -Giving the error code 0x80072F76,
-possibly- among others. NetRocket aka SlipStream has just updated to:
3.0.37. I tryed to put in update.microsoft.com into its proxy exclusions but
it didn't work. Only exiting the accelerator program allowed Windows Update
to scan properly. I'd imagine that reverting to the prior version of the
accelerator may work also. Confer with the accelerator program programmers to
get their answer to the problem.

I'm using Netzero and had to turn off the HiSpeed feature to solve this
error. After I turned off the HiSpeed the new Windows Update version (V6)
loaded just fine.
