same problem - I don't even get as far as that. Comes up with a IE error
and suggests adding thesite to Trusted zone etc etc. I've done everything
to allow this to work in my browser and in my firewall. Still won't work,
and the MSKB doesn't list the error that IE produces! (Error number:
0x80072F76)

The error (extract) is:

Error number: 0x80072F76
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.
For self-help options:

a.. Frequently Asked Questions

b.. Find Solutions

c.. Windows Update Newsgroup

Not even these support links work!

It says "The Website encountered a Problem" so is that saying it's my end
or Microsoft's end? My security settings should be OK to allow this to
work. I have put updates.microsoft.com etc in my Trust Zone, I have listed
these sites in my firewall and allowed cookies, allowing ActiveX etc (and
whatever) to be run.

The "Internet" zone is set at "Medium" which is the default/recommended
setting for normal browsing i.e. will only run signed ActiveX controls etc,
and prompt before downloading/running.....

The above error number isn't even listed in the MSKB/Support pages relating
to this problem.

Any ideas? Thanks.

If you're using ZoneAlarm, shut it down then go to Windows Update. That
solved it for me. Good Luck.

Turn off Zone Alarm Pro, try again.
Turn off any Dial Up Accelerator, try again.

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Internet Options, Security Tab.
Update the Trusted Sites Zone by adding the Windows Update Web Address,
and reduce the Security Level in the Trusted Sites Zone to Low.

Thank you for the comment about turning off the accelerator. My friend is
using integrity.com and after I turned off the connection accelerator the
Microsoft Update worked.

I had similar problems.

For a solution that worked for me, see my posts at the thread titled . . .

Subject: RE: Windows updates failing. A lot.

P.S. The MS Email Support said "the following programs can affect the
connection to Windows Update site and I suggest you remove or disable them:
TweakMASTER DNS
Web Accelerator
Download Accelerator
GetRight
Browser Blaster
Sygate Personal Firewall
Norton Internet Security
Freedom firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall"

Hope this helps. -- Wanna B Ageek

Hi! I have been having the same problem for about 2 weeks, now. I have done
the same as you - enabled cookies, Activex, Java, you name it, put it in my
Firewalls Program Control, set privacy options, etc. as well as Window's. I
use Satellite broadband; this didn't start until my Wi-fi router was
installed. It has a different domain than the satellite, so that might be
the problem on my end. I also have spam control, and there might be
something I have to do there as well. The programs were installed before the
wi-fi, so I might have to do a system restore. I wrote to on-line support,
and will hear back within 24 hrs.
