Hi,

I installed the following critical updates to my Windows 2000 server and
after I rebooted, I could no longer run the windows updates. Also, the
"Backup Exec Devic & Media" service will no longer start. I tried
uninstalling all the patches that showed in Add/Remove programs but it did
not fix the issues.

Here is the list of updates installed on the server:

08/17/05
Windows Update (required)
Critical Updates:
KB896423
KB899588
KB896727
KB893756
KB899591
KB899587
KB890830
KB897715
KB896358
KB891861
KB901214
KB896422
KB890046
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 service pack 1
(note: I installed the same patches except for the Microsoft .NET Framework
1.1 service pack 1 on another Windows 2000 server and had no issues with it.)

I appreciate your immediate response

Do you use a proxy server to provide your server with access to the
Internet?

No. I was able to fix the problem but I'm not sure it was the best solution.
I reinstalled ie6setup.exe. After i rebooted the server the update page
worked. I went ahead and installed IE6.0sp1-KB871260-x86-ENU.exe and the
windows update page still worked. I reinstalled the following patches which
once again broke the windows update page. I did not uninstall the patches
this time but reinstalled the ie6setup.exe and IE6.0sp1-KB871260-x86-ENU.exe
one more time. The Windows update page worked again. (I called Veritas
technical support and they were able to get my backup exec services running.)
Reinstalling the patches did not affect the services the second time around.

Reinstalled patches:
KB896423
KB899588
KB896727
KB893756
KB899591
KB899587
KB896358
KB891861
KB901214
KB896422
KB890046
KB897715
KB823353
KB833989
Security Update (Microsoft jscrip vs 5.6)
Security Update (Windows 2000)

One more thing to note. After I reinstalled the two files, it is wanting me
to install more critical patches. I am not going to do this since I feel
sure it will break the Windows update yet again and I'll be back to square
one. I have contacted Microsoft and am waiting on their call for a permanent
solution.

I have had the same problem. Did the same steps you have done and am waiting
to see what MS Update causes this issue.

Hi All,

Wanted to put in my $0.02 worth on this issue and share what resolved the
infamous [0x80072F78] issue on a Windows 2000 server (no proxy, no firewall
issues) for me.

I'll explain step-by-step for those who need the illustrative version:

(Terminate any Internet Explorer browsers or iexplore.exe processes)

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type 'cmd'
4. Press [ENTER]
5. Type 'proxycfg -d'
6. Press [ENTER] (Exit the current window)
7. Click Start
8. Click Program Files
9. Click Administrative Tools
10. Click Services
11. Right click the "Automatic Updates" service
12. Click [STOP]
13. Click Start
14. Click Programs
15. Click Accessories
16. Click Windows Explorer
17. Navigate to %SYSTEMROOT% (e.g. c:\WINNT)
18. Right click on the folder titled "Windows Update"
19. Click [DELETE]
20. Right click on the folder titled "SoftwareDistribution"
21. Click [DELETE]

From the 'Services' window in step 10...

22. Right click the "Automatic Updates" service
23. Click [START] (Exit out of the current window)
24. Re-run Automatic Updates

I had success on this on three of my Windows 2000 servers.

I really hope this helps a few of you!

When I try to run "proxycfg -d" on my Windows 2000 Server, it responds with
the error message:

'proxycfg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

A search for "proxycfg" on my server's boot drive turns up no files.

Also, I didn't find a folder called "Windows Update", but there was one
called "Windows Update Setup Files". I renamed that one.

I did find the "SoftwareDistribution" folder, and deleted that.

I then restarted the "Automatic Updates" service.

I then went back to the Windows Update site. This time, instead of getting
the error immediately, I got the "Express" and "Custom" options.

I select the "Express" option. The response was the usual scanning for
updates image, then it came back and told me that I had to install the
"Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool".

I selected the "Install Updates" option. It came back and told me that I had
not selected anything, then displayed the Installation summary page,
indicating one failure, the problem being that the "End User License
Agreement (EULA) Not Accepted". Difficult to accept it if the license
agreement is never displayed!

And reloading the Windows Update page brought me right back to square one,
with the [0x80072F78] error.

Brian,

Sorry to hear of the less than ideal results. Seems as though it almost
worked for your case and then brought you back to square one.

I did find only one link on the 'Net after over 15 minutes of searching for
proxycfg (it seems as though Microsoft has removed the download) which can be
found here:

http://www.postcodeanywhere.co.uk/do...s/proxycfg.zip

BTW, sorry about the misspelling on the "Windows Update" folder.

Okay, everyone thanks for all the information.
JT thanks for the proxycfg link I tried in vain to search for the file.

Anyway, I reinstall IE again and this time added each update one at a time
to see what update was causing the issue. After installing IE Service Pack
Security Update (KB896727) I had the same problem. I was able to repeat this
on my home computer also. So for a workaround reinstall IE, go to Windows
Updates and install all updates except for KB896727.

Thak *you* for the work in identifying the work around. I was having the
problem consistently, so reinstalled IE6 SP1 and it worked fine, then I did
an express update and it broke (no other activity, this is a new Win2K Server
system I am just trying to get current with fixes). I reinstalled IE6 SP1
again, then used custom update, bypassing KB896727, and Windows Update now
works fine again.

Bottom line: It appears one should skip KB896727 for now.
