Hello Everyone,

I have moved from V5 to V6 version of the Update Service recently and since
then whenever I visit Windows Update page I get redirected to
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us and a
error number (0x800A1391) is displayed on the webpage. Also, I have noticed
that the Office Update dosent work anymore.

I did find a KB article with a solution, but then it doesnt seem to work for
me. The article ID is 836961. Also wanna mention that I have ZoneAlarm Pro,
Norton Antivirus 2005 and MS AntiSpyware running on my system

If you guys have solution for this do please let me know.

Thanks a trillion in advance

I'm having the same problem after the last XP update. With Norton Internet
Security 2005 and Microsoft Antivirus, as well as Spybot: Search & Destroy
and Adaware running or variously utilized. I now get the same error message
when trying to use Windows Update and I can't use Office Update, either. I
was told to apply several websites to my "safe/allowed" sites lists in
"Internet Options", etc... Still didn't work. Microsoft had me delete
everything in my "softwaredistribution" folder in Windows; that didn't work,
either. Now my system's crawling along, slower than believable. All was
well until I installed the latest updates. What gives?

Try adding the following sites to the IE Trusted Sites zone

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;836961
You receive an "Initialization error 0x800A1391" error message and the
Windows Update Web site does not appear

Make sure your Firewall isn't blocking Windows Update.

Also check for the presence of malware on the system. Go here to have it
scanned
http://www.auditmypc.com/patch-manag...-software-.asp

Here for the preliminary steps in removing the malware, if found on the
system :
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm

Feedback from Gary
I had all of these Trusted Sites defined but they did not help. What I found
was the "Make sure your firewall isn't blocking Windows Update" warning was
more relevent to this problem.

I run ZoneAlarmPro and, normally, when a site is blocked by ZA in some way,
ZA raises a Privacy Alert. However, in this case, the various trusted
Microsoft sites involved in the current Windows Update system did NOT raise a
privacy alert that ZA was inhibiting ActiveX or Scripts from running (my
default). When I enabled these 2 code items in ZA for the sites
- download.windowupdate.com (NOTE the 's' missing from 'windowsupdate' -
don't ask me why) and for
- support.microsoft.com,
Windows Update started to behave more normally (without any error), although
WU now wants to download a new Update system.

The fact that I was not warned ZA was blocking code from the WU sites is
probably a fault in ZoneAlarm, perhaps related to Trusted sites. Other
Privacy alerts were displaying at the time for microsoft sites, but not code
Privacy alerts. I will report it to ZoneLabs.

Hello All,

Guess what???? If I shutdown my ZoneAlarm everything seems work fine. I was
able to connect to Windows Update and had my XP SP2 patched up.

The problem could be your firewall. I have eTrust Personal Firewall and read
about a Norton firewall with the same problem and their solution worked for
me. I went to privacy and then Site List tab and right clicked on
“update.microft.com” clicked options then to Cookies tab, Ad Blocking tab and
Mobile Code tab and cleared all the checked boxes. Norton will be a little
different but you gust have to stop it from blocking Microsoft. I no longer
get the 0x800A1391 Error and can update again. I hope this helps.

Tony,

I also use eTrust Personal Firewall and get the Windows Update error
0x80072F76 even after have cleared all the checked boxes at Cookies tab, Ad
Blocking tab and Mobile Code in “update.microsoft.com” entry.

I would like if someone could give us a better solution than shutdown the
firewall protection while running Woindows Update.

Thank you a lot,

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error 0x80072EFD," "Error
0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when you try to use the Windows
Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site
