Hi Jim,

Give this a try..........

Go to Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 Softpub.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 Mssip32.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 Initpki.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Now try the Windows Update site.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, re-register the Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll,
Initpki.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsaenh.dll, Gpkcsp.dll, Sccbase.dll, Slbcsp.dll,
Mssip32.dll, and Cryptdlg.dll files. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type regsvr32 softpub.dll, and then press ENTER.
4. Click OK when you receive the message that DllRegisterServer in
Softpub.dll succeeded.
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for the following files: Wintrust.dll,
Initpki.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsaenh.dll, Gpkcsp.dll, Sccbase.dll, Slbcsp.dll,
Mssip32.dll, and Cryptdlg.dll.
6. Type exit, and then press ENTER to quit Command Prompt.

Jim, I have the same problem and the same error number as you do -- I cannot
check for updates. I have Windows XP and SP1 but have not installed SP2
because I have heard it still has some glitches that haven't been corrected.
Do you have Windows XP and did either Terry's or Patti's solutions work for
you? Thanks for whatever pearls of wisdom you can offer!

Hi Patti,

I tried your advice to Jim and it worked perfectly for me, too! I finally
was able to access Windows Updates and have now installed all my critical
updates. Thanks a million for your clear, concise and EXCELLENT
directions.....

Hi mike,

Are you able to successfully check for updates after restarting your
computer? If not, try registering one further .dll file:

Start>Run and key in:
regsvr32 Wintrust.dll
Click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on OK in the RegSvr32 dialogue box

Restart your computer, then try Windows Update.
