Here are some things to try:
1. Delete temporary internet files and enable scripting of active x
control files and than test.
2. Download KB842773 (BITS 2.0)
Update package that includes Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
version 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available for Windows XP

Mine is a HP Compaq D530 model running on Windows XP Professional (SP1). I
have tried numerous times for a week to fix the error mentioned above but
failed. The message that pops up is "Windows Update has encountered an
error
and cannot display the requested page..."
