Error Code: 0x80244016

0x80244016 - SUS_E_PT_HTTP_STATUS_BAD_REQUEST
Http status 400 - invalid syntax

Try :-

Suggestion 1. Delete temporary internet files and enable scripting of activex control
files and then test. See this link for activex control:
http://www.infinisource.com/features/surf-safe.html

Suggestion 2. Download KB842773 (BITS 2.0)
Update package that includes Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) version
2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 is available for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;842773

Suggestion 3. Are you using any 3rd party application that hide your IP address for
example any anonymous web surfing programs?

1. Click on Start/Run
2. Type "cmd" (w/o quotes)in the open box to get to a DOS prompt
3. Type "proxycfg -d" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
4. Type "net stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
5. Type "net start wuauserv" (w/o quotes) at the C prompt and hit enter
6. Now try the site again.

Did you see Taurarian's answer on the other subthread from the day
before? That could give you the idea that there is a problem with
transport protocol or something blocking it for some reason (e.g.
a misconfigured firewall) and using the protocol to signal that.

It may be something as trivial as using HTTP 1.1 instead of HTTP 1.0
(which you could test simply enough) or you might have to get a packet
trace and look at it for clues.

Good luck

Petr,

If you still have the problem of Error 0x80244016 while updating windows,
you will have to try the following instructions, which were provided by Sean
of Microsoft after many many e-mail correspondence. To be frank, it worked
very well..... You will have to note that i use Windows XP, with Service Pack
2 installed.

Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open
box and click OK.

In the right pane, all system services will be listed. Please check whether
the following three services have been started:

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Event Log

If not, please double click the service. In the tab "General ", make sure
the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Start" under
"Service Status" to start this service.

Secondly, please delete the SoftwareDistribution folder:

Enter Safe Mode

1. Restart your computer.
2. While your computer is booting up, press F8 to invoke the startup menu.
3. In the startup menu, choose Safe Mode.
4. Log on as an administrator.
Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform
differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.
5. Locate the C:\windows and delete the subfolder SoftwareDistribution

Then, please check the Internet Explorer settings:

Reset Internet Explorer

1. Click Start, click Run, input "INETCPL.CPL" (without the quotation marks)
and press Enter.
2. Click Use blank.
3. Click Delete cookies and Delete files on the General tab.
4. Click Clear History in the History area, and then click OK in the dialog
box that appears.
5. Click Settings, click View Objects, delete all objects there, and then
close the window.
6. Click View Files, delete all files there, and then close the window.
7. On the Connections tab, click the LAN Settings button, and then uncheck
all the boxes.
8. On the Advanced tab, click the Restore Defaults button, and then click to
clear the checkbox beside "Enable third-party extensions".
9 On the security tab, please click each of the four kinds of sites in the
security settings and then click the "default level" button.
10. Click OK to save these settings.

Then, please go to https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp to
test
the issue.

Note: Please make sure that you have disabled your anti-virus programs
(Norton, Trend PC-Cillin, etc.), Firewalls, pop-up blockers and Web
Accelerator software as these programs do not allow the Windows Update site
to communicate with your system. You can re-enable these programs once
installation of the updates is completed.
