I am not able to use the update site, as it throws the following error after

I have received the same message (but different error code) and haven't been
able to get updates for about three months now. I have exchanged numerous
emails with Microsoft support and they have been NO HELP WHATSOEVER. After
about a month of messing around trying different things....they started over
with the same instructions from the month before!!! They want me to rename
WUPS.DLL to WUPS.old but the system would let me. I get a message "cyclic
redundancy check".

By the way my error number is 0x8007001.

Can anyone provide some help?

0x80070017 -2147024873 - ERROR_CRC
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Clean out your temporary internet files.
0x80070017 relates to a Data error

Re-install Windows Update files
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe

Note If you have an x64-based computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x64.exe

Click Save in the File Download-Security Warning dialog box, and then select
the location where you want to save the file.
Double-click the file that you saved

See if you can access Windows Update now.

Click Save in the File Download-Security Warning dialog box, and then select the
location where you want to save the file.
Double-click the file that you saved

Note that if it says "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is
already installed.", run the exe with the command line switch /wuforce, like
this:
WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce

Thanks for the response. I did as you suggested and received an error
message "Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error".
Also don't know if I have an x64 computer.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Yes, the other said it wasn't a valid Win32 application when I downloaded and
tried to run it.

Have you done any hard disk maintenance recently such as "check disk"?

To start Check Disk

1. Open My Computer, right-click a drive, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now
then you get a dialog box, check "Automatically fix file system errors"
3. Click Start

You'll then have a message saying that it needs exclusive access and will run
next time you reboot.
