Click Start, click Run, type cmd, then click OK.
Type the following commands. Press Enter after each command.
proxycfg –d
proxycfg –u
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv
Open a new IE window and try the updates again.

Well, I get the same error message, despite having a direct BB connection
(ie, NO proxy), and inserting the update sites into trusted zone. And
'proxycfg' is not recognised (I use W2K Pro).

The KB article is no use whatever, and is totally irrelevant to my setup.
Anybody else got any clues?

Thank you, but it doesn't work. I have 5 Win2000 Server behind a firewall. 4
of them worked well, just one does not. I do not use a proxy.

Thanks to Brian. It's possible to update the server with the old version of WU
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Have you been able to see the new updates using the v4? When I use the v4 I
see 0 critical updates. If I use the v6 I see the 7 critical updates. I
wonder if MS is doing this on purpose. I too have a server (sql server) that
gets the error 0x8024402C when using Microsoft Update, but like I said when I
use the v4 I see 0 updates.

Anybody?

Mex,
Not knowing you setup...does each server have its own separate
firewall or do they all go to just one firewall. If they are separate
then compare your fifth server firewall settings to the others.

If Win2000 has the svchost.exe file (not sure, I only have XP)
then the firewall needs to be set to allow svchost access to
TCP outgoing port 80 and 443
UDP both ways port 53
for windows update via their update web site.

Now of course if you have just one shared firewall then I have no
idea. Have a look and see, or at least this may help someone else.
