I have automatically update my windows but when I try to manually update it I
get error message Error number: 0x8024502D. I followed the links for this
through Microsoft for download problems and it says it could be:
A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem. Double-check the
Proxy/Firewall settings. Add the following urls to the exception list within
your Firewall/Proxy:
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
For help configuring Proxy/Firewall refer to documentation or contact the
manufacturer.
1. What documentation??
2. How do I know if I only have one firewall security or another.
3. Where is the settings Microsoft refers to?
Thank you for any assistance.

Whatever documentation that came with whichever firewall you are running, if
you have one.

You should know what firewall you have in operation on your PC. ZoneAlarm?
Kerio? Norton Internet Security?

> 3. Where is the settings Microsoft refers to?

These would be settings in whichever third-party firewall that you might
have. They are not referring to Microsoft settings. The settings would
depend on which firewall you have.

As a check on your proxy configuration, please open a command prompt window,
and type the command:

proxycfg

and copy the results into a follow-up in this thread. If it says anything
other than "Direct access (no proxy server)." then we have something to look
into.

I am also getting this error but only periodically. I have no proxy server,
and therefore no proxy settings that need to be altered, correct?
I'm using Norton Internet Security Firewall and Windows Firewall (I run both
since I have encountered problems when the Windows Firewall is disabled) on
Windows XP with a DSL connection.
However, I can't find a place in either Firewall that will allow me to enter
the http exception addresses referenced in this 'fix'. I am only allowed to
enter programs in the exception list.
So I have changed nothing, yet sometimes I am able to access the updates
with no problem and other times, like today, I get the error.
With all this in mind, is this error just a problem with the website, then?
