I get the above when I visit the windows update site - I tried a visit
because I also noticed that the little Yellow Shield from the Automatic
Updates had not popped up this month on this PC although it had on my other
one (an XP Home system that I had previously validated windows XP on). I
suspected it may be something to do with the fact that I had not yet
validated XP on this PC yet. I also notice that some of the other web pages
on the Microsoft web site such as the one to launch an Email support request
or to sign in to this newsgroup now give a "Cannot find server or DNS Error"
in Internet Explorer although they still work fine on the other PC!

Anyone have any ideas what has gone wrong?

Be specific. Where do you see this symptom?
E.g. is there a corresponding dump or entry in Event Viewer?

Have you done any scans/repairs for malware?
This symptom makes me suspect that some malware's hooks
are broken. Such a thing could happen from incompletely
removing the obvious presence of it but leaving its hooks set.

Sorry but I havn't got the time to mount a major investigation - I simply
restored a recent full system image of my windows partition - up and running
again in 10 minutes. I should have done that 24 hours before rather than
trawling Google and newsgroups for an explanation and wasting valuable
working time.
