I am running WinXp Pro with SP1. It was a installed of a newly purchased CD.
Went to Windows update site once, was instructed to upgrade Update software
to Version 5. I did. NOW, everytime I try to update my computer, same
series of events occurs.
Start Windows Update - Works
Checking for latest version of Update software - Works
Screen with choice of Express or Custom Install opens
BUT THEN
After clicking either choice, the re-direct is to a page with the seemingly
universal message:
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:

The difference being, the Error Number displayed is:
Error number: 0xC80003FA
While nearly every error number listed in troubleshooter has an 8 after 0x,
this message has a C, making it unlike anything I've ever encountered before.
Has anyone else seen this error, or know what it means??
Mike

the cause of this is. If I work it out I will drop you a mail

Hi;

Close all instances of IE, then on the Start/Run line type: net stop
wuauserv (you'll see a cmd window open then close)

Open the Windows folder and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to
something like "SoftDistOld"

Open Control Panel/Internet Options. On the General tab click the Delete
Files button, then check the option to delete offline content.

When that completes, on the Start/Run line type: net start wuauserv (you'll
see a cmd windows open/close again).

Now give Windows Update another try. Do you still get the same error?

Mike, as you'd expect the 0xC80003FE error doesn't mean the same as the one
Mike received (0xC80003FA). However, it may be that the same solution I
posted to him will work for you also, so give those steps a try.

BTW, your error indicates a Disk I/O error, so if the steps I posted to Mike
don't work for you, do a full scan of your hard drive(s) for errors. (My
Computer, right-click the drive letter and select Properties, then Tools,
Check for Errors).
