I have tried several times to download and install SP2, but i have always
failed with an error message of 80070002. After searching in this forum, i
have followed this advice:
************************************

0x80070002
ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
The System cannot find the file specified

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=17&ln=en

***************************************

but this has not helped. Maybe someone can help me out!

Peter:

Maybe you would want to try article #234292 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.
Supposedly there is some connection or issue with the Media Player 9
version.
See what you come up with.

Harry.

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I had a look at the checklist and I
think I am fine with that. I downloaded the 260MB IT-developers edition from
the webpage named on the checklist. After downloading it successfully, i
tried to install at but failed. When the unpacking is nearly complete I get
the error message: File not found, it shows in the line above that it is
working on a file called forms.dll.
I had a look at the knowledge base article, yes this is the same error code,
but i dont really know what to do with this.
thank you very much for helping

I am wondering--it is NOT about SP2, which I had no trouble installing--well,
I had it on "Auto." It is STILL on "auto"(well, not at this moment, cause
someone suggested I try to turn that off and install it manually--although
I've tried to install it manually--and my pc has tried over 200x!!), but I am
having alot of prob.---I cannot get the new patches from 1/12 /05 to
install--they download--that;s it. Then, it says there's an error, but not
what kind? One is the "malicious software" patch/update, and I'm very
worried, as I have made a neo-Nazi enemy (you should see his
website--shivers)who has been "following" me around (he knows imp't. details
he could not possibly know otherwise). I just told him I liked a book on
Amazon and thought it disrespectful to comment on how the person "drooled"
from Parkinson's, rather than the content of the book. So, since 1/12, I have
gotten at least 6 warnings from Earthlink that different worms , as well as
one Trojan Horse have TRIED to enter my machine. It "blocked and cleaned"
them--well, if I don;t have an update, and this guy is intent on "getting
me"--he will!! (Don't tell me how to get rid of him and his 10 e-mail
addresses--I solved that w/my attorney brother-in-law) The PROBLEM that I
KEEP running into on these "help-sites"--prob. w/downloading patches/updates
(it'd help if MSN would not rush their product to mkt. to make more $$, and
fill in the gaps first, but, anyway--) (I don;t mean to be so LONG about
this--just let me explain--I'm NOT a pc "geek"--completely self-taught--fried
more than one, while living on a disability pension--so throw me a bone!)I
continue to see people mention .dll files (executable folders)? When I bought
Norton Systemworks (which earthlink advertises all over their "protection"
site, yet it is incompatible w/their firewall, e-mail--Total Access-or Asses,
as I like to call it--anybody know how I can use earthlink e-mail without
TA??--scan, Connection Alive--but they don;t say that before you buy it, and
to just renew it is $10 a month, so it seemed to make sense to pay $40, as
SystemWorks (esp. GoBack--incompatible w/SR, also)was so helpful to me on
Win98.I tried to install it and it said I was missing a "mscoree.dll" file in
the folder C://Programs (forgive me--this is from memory--I've long sionce
given up getting it back for < $60, which I cannot pay)Files/Common
Files/...etc...it's an "executable" file, it says. I've even gotten it
re=installed, and it disappears again. My pc is so screwed up (I use Norton
Virus, ad-aware,spybot,spyblaster,Error Guard--AVOID THE ERROR GUARD!--and
earthlink and WinXP Firewalls (It SAYS they are NOT incompatible, but I
wonder. Gates is pretty selfish when it comes to these things) I had to
un-install 4 of SystemWorks Prog. (including Firewall, of course--but, also,
mail check, Connection Keep or something, and a couple more). I THOUGHT I had
it fixed to just the prob. with the new patches/updates, until MSN FINALLY
called yesterday (I first called 1/12/05), and it took 2 hrs. to get my
Desktop up (it just kept saying Windows is loading....) and he had to go to a
"meeting". (So do I, since I work from home, but, anyway--or used to) I'd
given up on "mscoree.dll" until I saw all these .dll files showing up in
prob. w/downloads/patches, etc. They are also used alot in the "solutions"
and sites given. Can someone PLEASE tell me what this .dll file business has
to do w/downloads/updates, and why is my pc now just a great big gray CD
player? (It WILL still do that!) I appreciate any helpful comments,
guesses, explanations, or, best of all, tell me it has nothing to do with
it......THANK YOU very much, anybody,

Did you find that in svcpack.log? [1]
Perhaps it would help to post an extract from it?
FWIW I'm finding a module referred to in there called
System.Windows.Forms.dll
Also found as that by searching msinfo32 for forms.dll
If that's what you're seeing it could be that your problem is related
to your .Net Framework. [2]

<title>KB318785 - Determine whether service packs are installed on the .NET Framework</title>

[1] searching for *.log files containing forms.dll finds several
besides svcpack.log and they all have something to do with .Net

[2] something with the same name also shows for me in the
..Net Framework 1.1 Configuration tool (e.g. via Start menu, Administrative tools)
under the Assembly Cache
