What operating system are you using?
What directions have you already followed?

Have you read:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

I would place a bit on -
• Too much activity on the update site
or
• Server time-out issues on the Windows Update or Microsoft Update site

Let it go for a day and try again tomorrow.

Dear TaurArian,

ANother user posted here
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...&cr=&sloc=&p=1

Same problem.

For me I use Windows XP Professional SP3

And for the Directions I Tried, I tried everything on the link you gave,
along with the HOSTS file, but found nothing on it.

Thanks for the response.
I am using XP, read the instructions on MS website for this error, checked
the HOSTS file, disabled the IP address there for local host - didn't work.
disabled Norton anti virus - didn't work, disabled the firewall, didn't work.
I will try again tomorrow. Thanks

My computer was infected with Antivirus XP2008 spyware, I removed all the
files and cleaned up as much as I could. I don't know if this is a result of
that too!!!

OK, let's rub our crystal balls and see if we can guess:

a) Which Version of Windows ?
b) What is the installed antivirus\security software ?
c) Is there a
1. Third party firewall installed ?
2. Popup\cookie blocker installed ?
3. Toolbars installed ?
d) Does the system access "windows update" directly through a modem;
dial-up; a wireless router ?

The person who comes up with the most correct answers wins an all
expenses paid trip to Windows Update !

Hi SacredCultivator, due to the time of the month, I believe it's more likely
caused by high traffic on the WU site. Let it go for 24 hours and try again
then.

Like I said earlier, I got notification, ask to download the updates and
never saw the icon again - most likely I'll get the updates in a day or two.
I'm not rushing it.

I shall wait a day and see.

Dear Readers,

Well new day and still no luck, so I definitely don't think it is due to
the server being really busy...

I had my laptop infected with "Antivirus XP2008" it is a spyware - I cleaned
it up as much as I could. I think it is gone now. Cleaning involved deleting
few .dll files. Just wondering if this has to do anything with it.
