error when running Microsoft Update

I have one computer that gets an error when I manually try to run Microsoft
Update. The computer seems to get updates OK since Auto Update is set to
download automatically but when i use IE to go to Microsoft Update I get an
error that says "Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered a
problem and needs to close". Usually IE or the operating system will slow to
a crawl or lock up forcing a reboot.

What can cause this? This computer has recently had an OS rebuild so I am
not sure what to think of it.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Please define "OS rebuild" and what problems led to taking such measures?
(If you were dealing with a hijackware infection, you've got more work to
do.)
