Norman, I don't know if you have solved your problem yet, but I had the same
trouble and found a post on this site that fixed it!! I had tried many
different methods that didn't work (removing the audio/reinstalling, enabling
the device, reinstalling drivers etc....), but this finally worked for me.
Here is a copy of the guy's post (I found it under topic: "sound drivers").
Same info holds true whether you own a Dell, HP or other brand computer or
laptop just go to your personal manufacturers website:

Found a solution for anyone using an HP laptop.
Go to the following address, type your model number and select "Download
drivers and software", then download an installation pack for the conexant
drivers.

Which has the drivers for vista (I am using an HP dv9000) and it works!!!
