I can't update to SP2. It begins the installation for a little while and
stops... says "The requested section was not present in the activation
content. Service pack 2 installation did not complete." I have to then
close that box and it says it didn't install. Doesn't give me any other
clues as to why it stopped.

I have rebooted, cleared off 7 GIGs of space on my C: drive and that doesn't
help.

Anyone know whats going on?

Thanks - Angie

"Angie",

I am sorry you are running into this issue. The best bet for you will be to
do two things:
1. Take your operating system back to the day before you installed it.
2. Install SP2 from a different location.
I'll show you both procedures here:

1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode.
2. Log into the local Administrator account.
3. Click Start
4. Click Run
5. type: msconfig
6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key.
7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at
the General tab.
8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
9. On the calendar in the wizard, select the date before you started trying
to install SP2.
10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a
point where you can be ready to install SP2 again.

Try installing SP2 from a different location, such as here:

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (please disregard the IT
Professionals and Developers portion of this, as it will run on an
individual computer as well: (266 MB))

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

Please reply back to this thread and let us know how this goes!

Sincerely,

I was having the same problem. After some troublehsooting with tech support,
they had me type the following command at the run line. I believe it fixes
the the registry in some way. In any event after running this command, the
error did not occur again and SP2 was installed sucessfully.

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose /areas regkeys

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to post your answer. I did end up using
'rb's' suggestion and ran that command line. It fixed the registry and I was
then able to successfully apply Service Pack 2.

Thank you again for the efforts!

just trying the command to see if it works, but it comes to my attention that
typing secedit gives me an error.
Shouldnt it be REGEDIT?

>I am having the same problem. I did try all the possible solutions but it
does not work.
I have been in contact with someone from Microsoft and he asked me these
Q's, but I have not heard anythig yet from him. These are the Q's he asked me
with my answers:

Do you have any anti-virus software installed on your computer system, if
so what is it? Yes McAfee.

-Do you have any firewalls installed on your computer system, if so what is
it? I think yes, McAfee.

-Do you have service pack 2 installed on your computer System? No, when I
try to download it it stops in the middle and a message says that there are
some files missing, the installation can not be continued.

-When did this problem start happening?Last year when I started to download
the sp2 for the first time.

-What Software has been installed/uninstalled or modified on the computer
system?I really can not remember, but mainly the anti virus software trail
versions.

-What Hardware has been installed/uninstalled or modified on the computer
system?nothing

-Please provide detailed Steps of when the error occurs: It starts doing the
installation, doing the files back up, then this message: Initializing
installation .... Done! And then starts doing Installing windows XP service
pack 2 and then suddenly an error message comes up as : Access is denied.
-Please provide the error code, if applicable? Error 0x87FF36B0

-Are you on a Local area network? I don't know. Its wanado

-Are you facing this issue on a single computer / multiple computers? Just
my laptop
-Can you reproduce this problem every time? Yes
Could anyone help me to sort it out please. Thank you

Hi there,
I'm having problems installing SP2 also. I've tried several things from
this board, but my current error message is this one (0x87FF36B0) so that's
why I'm on this thread.

I've tried "Restore" and that didn't work. I've tried changing permissions
in the register. That seemed to get rid of some errors, but another would
appear. I'm not sure what log to look at to figure out what's going on.
(I'm not that savy on computers.) I'm not sure I'd know what the log was
telling me, anyway. My svcpak.log has errors in it. I don't know which
one's are critical. The first one that appears, in the 3rd line, is:
4.781: Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE

Is there anyone out there that can help me?
Thanks!
