Recently CHKDSK found a bad cluster with data on my hard drive. Nevertheless,
everything was ok until Windows update KB896688 failed to install with Error
Code 0x80070002. I have downloaded the file WindowsXP-KB896688-x86-ENU.exe
and it exits with error messages: "The system cannot find the file specified"
and "installation did not complete". All 17 files to be replaced appear to be
present either in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 or in C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer. How can I find out which file is missing?

Thanks
Eric

Hi,

1. Search for a file called "iuengine.dll" and delete it (keep a backup
copy).
2. Visit windows update site as per normal to try to install updates.
3. Close your browser.
4. Then run your downloaded "WindowsXP-KB896688-x86-ENU.exe" file.

Cheers

Thanks! After deleting the file and reinstalling WU engine, I was able to
install the update. Unfortunately, after that IE started to experience the
same ActiveX problems as those already discussed in a parallel thread, so I
have uninstalled KB896688. My present concern is how to prevent it from being
installed automatically in the future.

Hi Eric,

Sorry, can't help you on that part because my automatic updates does not
work and I've been relying on manual updates for the last year. It was only
last month that I encounted the same error and after many nights of
searching for a solution, hense I posted the "work-around" that was proven
to work for me.

Cheers

Alan
