I have a new install of Windows XP Pro on my home computer. When I go into
Windows Update, I am asked to allow Active-X to be installed. I allow this
and I get the dialog box, to install. I click "Install". I get the
following error after 3 or 4 minutes.

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
- Refresh the page.
- In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the
Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
- Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.
[Error number: 0x8DDD0004]

I have done all these things many times and all the help items listed, and
nothing I do gets me past getting this error. I never get to the page with
the updates I need to install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you currently running WinXP, WinXP SP1 or WinXP SP2?

Did you upgrade to WinXP, do a Repair Install of WinXP, do a Recovery
reinstall of WinXP, or do a "clean install" of WinXP? If any of the letter,
why?

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.
