Error w/ SP2 Install

I've tried from Windows Update and from the full install.

It locks up on the "Checking Product Key"
This is an OEM install on a laptop fresh back from Sony after replacing the
HD, so it's untouched at this point (yes, it has been activated).

i've tried a number of things, including patching Norton up to the latest
version, installing all other Windows Updates, etc.

The error in the svcpack.log files says:
77.522: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.
77.522: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.
77.522: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is
not correct.
77.532: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is

Check to see if branches.inf is marked Read-Only?
