error while trying to perform XP windows update check

While trying to go to the update.microsoft.com web site to check for windows
updates I get an error and it does not coontinue.

The page first says:
"Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating
software for use with the website…
The website uses ActiveX controls to determine which version of the
software your computer is running. If you see an ActiveX warning, make sure
the control is digitally signed by Microsoft before installing it or allowing
it to run. "

It then goes to an error page. The error number is 0x80072F76
The test just says that an error was encountered ant tries to take me to
some self-help links.

WHat is wrong here?

This idea worked really well. I turned off my internet accelerator programme
and I was able to access the Windows upadte site. Thanks for the information.
