i this error: the windows update servers are temp unavailable

hi,

when i click check for updates i get the following error;

Windows update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. The windows update servers anr teporarily unavailable. Please try again
later.

I have been having this error for 2 days and if i use my laptop i get
straight on.

The system is a windows 98 se system that i have just removes a load of
spyware from. I have also tried without my firewall/antivirus turned on.

Does anyone have any advice? i have tried reinstalling explorer but it hasnt
helped.

Be sure to not turn off your firewall when connected to internet.
What firewall & version is this? What AV ? What's the 'current' IE version on this pc?

Having noted this is on Win98 SE, I wonder if you have already posted to the Win98 group (where you'll still find experts on this o.s. )

Now then, the "Cannot display page" is a generic message shown, and may be due to any one of different issues.
Highly recommend you first look at the contents of your update log. Then try to find the 'actual' error noted there.

Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log

Look at bottom of file. Post back here, any Error notations. and if not, still copy & paste (here) the section for "fail" date.

Problem: While the Windows Update Web site is loading, you receive
Initialization Error 0x800C0002

Problem Description:
We usually see this error if Windows Update is looking for iuident.cab on a
different server than where they are trying to access Windows Update.

We typically see this from users who are members of our Beta program and who
switch between our beta and production web sites.

This may also apply to users whose corporate administrator has deployed
Software Update Services.

Resolution:
1. Click on Start, Run and type "REGEDIT" (w/o the quotes). The Registry
Editor will open.

*WARNING*

Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee
that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

2. Navigate to the following key:

This is all we really needed Pete. Error 0x800C0002 at win98 WinUP
site means you have something wrong with your Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
communications which are required for WinUP to work. Fix that and 98
WinUP site will work for you.

Try these sites for testing and further info about how to fix your SSL.

Normally that means that you would be using WUv6 (or perhaps WUv5)
which would not be available to the OP with that older OS.

I think that this is your Windows Update.log (note the space)?
Have you been trying to visit the Windows Update Catalog too?
That should be the only reason that you would have current entries
in this log.


If you are really having a symptom as the OP described it
you should be looking for clues in your WindowsUpdate.log
(note no space) or reinstalling the WUv6 agent. For help
with that search for posts in previous incidents which referred to
a download called WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe


BTW since none of this information is going to be useful to the OP
and may be confusing for the original thread I suggest you start your
own thread if you need more help. Next time please post more details
about what you are seeing, including changes that you observe in the
IE Status bar, Title bar and Address bar. Remember, your words
have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.
