Errors with proxy server set...

I have proxy server setup under "Connections" tap on computer to limit access
to internet. Under the Advanced tab I put in 'Exceptions' for the websites
that can be accessed. I have put in all kinds of variations for the Windows
websites with wildcards and such so that Windows update will still work but
get "windows has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view" at the point i think it is getting the results of the scan.
Question is, what website information do i need to put in for windows update?
Or, if I have auto update setup, do I even need to worry about it accessing
the web browser?
Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
