XP worked out of the box for some, but not all.. printers, keyboards,
scanners, modems, video cards all fell by the wayside..
Some older programs worked with XP and some didn't.. support was withdrawn
for older stuff by manufacturers just as it is now..
Vista also works for some out of the box, and again it all depends on the
mix of hardware and software..
XP needed the service packs, just as Vista will..
There has never been any release of software that didn't have bugs and
didn't need fixing at some point..
XP required more of everything over and above its Win 9x cousins just as
Vista requires more than XP..
Some things never change..
Even some Linux distros appear almost every six months in revised form, and
the present Ubuntu Feisty Fawn has more than 70 updates waiting in the wings
to be installed by the user..
Maybe software should not have bugs when released, but there are so many
permutations of hardware software in the pc world, it is inconceivable that
any one company could test them all
Mac OS also has to be updated now and again even though the OS is written
specifically for Mac hardware that can't be changed by the user..
You would spend your time better by asking how to overcome problems rather
than just ranting and getting nowhere..
