Hi. I really think the updates today are not a spoof. I updated 2 machines.
One by connecting thru "Windows Update" in IE6. The other thru "Help and
Support". I doubt both of these could be cracked at the same time.

I AM puzzled about why I cannot find any information about these updates in
the Knowledge Base.

Not a very helpful or constructive response, Mr Bear.

Please explain WHY no information is available on, for example, KB896688
when searching either Microsoft or Google.

It seems very strange to me - your answer may be of help to others not as
experieced or knowledgeable as you .......... (presume yourself to be?)

David B.

PS Your spelling leaves me in some doubt - I think you missed off an "a" !

Could be Mr Bear was offering advice.. As I recall Rumpole, after a rough
day in court, would have one or two glasses of plonk...

I had (and still have) similar feelings about "waiting a day or two" for the
search index to update itself. "Trust me" does not work. Now, the
information was there but it was not easliy retrievable.

Since we can't find it by searching, how do we get nice old Microsoft to
include an active current link in the update information to assure us poor
folks we aren't being spoofed, scammed, hacked or otherwise digitally
castrated?

If PA Bear thinks irt is a good idea, maybe he could pass it on.

Hello Cycloid - you seem to be the only one even remotely concerned about this!

Maybe wrongly (?), I have always understood that email messages and Windows
Updates were THE two areas which were NOT altered by using System Restore
i.e. once the updates had been installed, they were/are on one's PC for
posterity.

It therefore seems logical that when carrying out a Windows Update scan
after a Restore , MS should find that my PC needs NO more updates.

However, I'm told to install the updates again. "Sky" has advised that I
must install them again and that they will appear as additional items in my
History folder.

Why do I fear that this may not be correct and that I may simply be
introducing SpyWare/Viruses on to my PC? ........... Maybe a "flash" of a
screen when I first manually installed the (Spoof) Updates - which WOULD have
been eliminated by the Restore operation ?

I just do not know what to believe! I'm still worried that there is a
problem (at least on my own PC!).

Wrong. Although some of the actual files from WU items may remain on
your system, the Registry is restored to what it was the date the System
Restore point was created. That Registry will have no information about
any updates you installed after that System Restore point was
created --- therefore for all practical purposes the WU items are not
installed on your system (there are no entries for them in the Registry,
which is what WU checks to determine what is needed on your computer).

Not so. You can verify this for yourself. Install any one of the new
updates, say KB905414. When the install is complete (to include the
Restart) open RegEdit and look at this key (one of several created by
the update):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB905414

Now perform a System Restore to a point prior to 11 October. When done,
check the Registry again. Not only will the above key be gone, but ALL
references to KB905414 will be gone from the Registry --- because when
that SR point was made you HAD NOT INSTALLED the update. Thus as far as
Windows is concerned the update does not yet exist.

I don't know why you fear this. The updates are all coming from the
same Microsoft site, they are all digitally signed, and they all require
that you "trust" MS before they will install on your system.

While I fully encourage everyone to be cautious and alert about what
gets installed onto their computers, in this case it appears you have
stretched that a bit beyond what is needed, to the point of paranoia.

I once again encourage you to install the updates so that your system
will remain secure. But I won't pester you further with my posts.

I first thought the updates suspicious because I could not find anything at
Microsoft about them using the KB number. It did not occur to me at the time
that "search" is behind by as much as 1 or 2 days. That still seems silly to
me, but I'm not a "big system" kind of guy - so I would not know.

However, it does seem we are "ok" and that the update was in fact "real". It
does put me off quite a lot to find how hard it is to find that out. Since
customer complaints are the best source for a business for improving its
products I HOPE Microsoft is listening.

Don't get me wrong. I really like the Knowledge Base. I also like the "Tech"
section. I started with DOS 2.01 on an IBM machine in 1982/3 (earlier was
CPM & before that Hollerith cards on an IBM7094). I build my own machines. I
know how to wire a null modem. This is not my livelihood however. I just
wish it were easier to "FIND" things.

When it comes to whether to update and re-update, I have to defer to the
"Sky Kings" of the world.

Don't know if this helps much, but it is all I can offer.
