I updated Windows XP with: Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow
Remote Code Execution (908531). I have vba code which accesses the local file
system to read a file. This is where Excel hangs. The update refers to a new
file, Verclsid.exe. As a work around, if I rename this file, the problem is
solved. The security note says "Verclsid.exe is used to verify a COM object
before it is instantiated by Windows Explorer. " What do I need to do to
solve this problem without renaming (and disabling) the file.

Saw your post and thought I would let you know that Microsoft told me to
delete KB908531 (done via add/remove programs from Control Panel) as there is
conflict with anti-virus programs such as Norton. They told me not to update
again until Microsoft have posted a patch.

Thanks for the additional info. The patch is long gone, by the method you
suggested.

My problems were solved by uninstalling HP Share to Web.

I uninstalled HP share to web and reinstalled the update. So far, no problems
- so thanks Geesey48.
