I just recently bought my daughter a HP laptop. Excel and word were installed when I bought it. The wireless router I purchased allows me to go on the internet OK. The trouble is when I try to use excel or word it will not work. When I turn off the router I am allowed to use excel and word.

Well I've never heard of that before. Please define "it will not work"

He means when the router is on excel and word doesn't work. When the router
is off, excel and word works.

I know that's what he /said/, but "doesn't work" can mean anything from
won't even start to freezes, to can't edit files etc etc etc. The OP
needs to be SPECIFIC.
And in any case there must be something really weird going on which he
hasn't mentioned because Office doesn't need an internet connection to
work...

Are you using any wireless security? What happens when
you use a direct LAN cable connection to your router when
the WiFi is turned off?

You didn't say what brand router or what software is used to connect to the
router.
It sounds like the wireless adapter software is messing things up.
Have you checked the HP site to see if there is a newer version of the
driver or software for the wireless adapter?
I don't use the software from the router maker or wireless adapter maker
unless it just won't work any other way.
The Windows wireless connection software seems to work fine and doesn't
usually interfere with other programs.

You need to be more specific - "Excel or Word will not work" conveys nothing
to us. Just what happens? As Gordon said in his response, Office (Excel,
Word, etc) do not need the Internet to be able to work.

That's why I asked him about his WiFi security. If the laptop
is wide open to intruders, then anything is possible, including
an intruder taking over rights to applications when the connection
is open.

Wrong. Original answer stands. Office does not need Internet access to work.
