Excessive CPU usage at start up

Have just upgraded to Vista and now the computer is working overtime
when it starts and I cannot do much for about half an hour or more until
the hard drive stops. What is it doing?
I have checked Task Manager and only a few percent is used by 2 or 3
programs but it shows up to 70 percent or more CPU usage. Tried stopping
desktop search but made no difference. What is going on?

What did you do about antivirus? I found my existing program was not
compatible with Vista and downloaded a free antivirus program. What
I did not realise was that the default was for it to run each time. I
have now changed it to manual start.

Hi Ron,

I'm not a Vista expert as I'm just testing the water right now but I did
notice that if you have Automatic Windows Update enabled it causes a lot of
disk thrashing at startup.

Hope this helps

I did the same thing so I have tried disabling it at startup but the
problem still remains but thanks for the suggestion.

Okay. What about defragmentation? I have mine not scheduled but
could it be that you have a scheduled start that never actually
finishes to keeps starting up again when you start the computer?

Windows Update was enabled and I disabled it but now of course Windows
complains regularly. However the disc does seem to be working less hard,
it is using up to 30 percent rather than 70.
Scott's suggestion about the defrager may be the answer, will post the
results if and when I find it.

Defragmentation was scheduled (but I didn't ask for it!) so I have
disabled it and it does seem uncommonly quiet at the moment. You may
have found the problem, if so I am very gratefull and will let you know
if it stays that way.

It appears that it was the disc defragmenter that was causing all the
disc activity. It must have been enabled when vista was installed and
Microsoft helpfully decided I didn't need to know that. My thanks for
all the suggestions, I don't think I would ever have found that because
I don't use Windows defrag and didn't know it could be scheduled.

hi
i bought an aldi special pc with vista on and mine was doing the same
but i read " i think in the help files" that vista watches what you open
and what programs you use so it can optimize your system ,
and indeed after a few days its stops , and mine is running just fine now .

i also read you dont need to defrag vista it does it its self when the
computor is
idle , and that is does not have to be done in 1 chunk , it can be stopped
and started
as many times as required , it will eventually defrag itself
like i say when the computor is not in demand .

you can however force a defrag ..

((((( what really gets up my nose is the way windows explorer works ))))

hope the info helps

pj
