Excessive Long wait for Windows Update

I have been used the normal windows update site located at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
to update my Windows XP Professional SP2 and noticed that even on a clean
DSL link that is normally around 1.6 mbps, that this takes about 3-4 mins
just to let me know if any updates are available. Is this normal these days ?
Seemed that it was far faster before. Time does not seem to vary based on
time of day or amount of updates that it has.
