Exchange 2003 update KB924334 WSUS issues

This past weekend I updated our three Exchange 2003 SP2 servers to the
latest version of the patch for Exchange 2003, KB924334. One is a
front end server and two are backend servers. None of the servers are
clustered This was the latest version of this patch dated 12/5/06.
The updates came from a WSUS server. On the FE server, everything
seemed to go fine. On the 2 backend servers, while the update was
installing there was an error while trying to shut down the IIS
service along with the mail stores. However, no message box was
displayed during the update that IIS had hung. The IIS shutdown issue
is discussed in KB907857. I did not know about this issue with IIS
beforehand, otherwise I would have followed the steps to shut down the
IIS services before running the update. On all three servers, the
update reported that it completed successfully. Even thought the
update did not require a reboot on the FE server and one of the BE
servers, the systems were restarted anyway. The second BE server did
require a reboot. When logging back into the BE server after the
reboot, the message appeared that there had been an error in IIS. It
was the notify Microsoft of the error message. Upon logging into the
other BE server, the same message that IIS had encountered a problem
and needed to close appeared. All Exchange services are running, and
all three servers appear to be functioning normally.

The issues is that all three Exchange servers show that they still
need to install the KB924334 update. It shows that the update is
needed in both WSUS, and on the boxes themselves in the form of the
yellow shield in the System Tray. On one of the BE servers, I re ran
the update. Again it appeared to finish and stated that it completed
successfully. I checked the event logs and did not see the IIS error
occur again during the second attempt at applying the update.
However, both WSUS and the machine itself both say that the update
needs to be installed.

I pulled the WindowsUpdate log for one of the BE Servers. I don't
understand what all of the entries are, but it does seem to me that
WSUS believed that the update was installed successfully. See the
entries below. In particular the last several entries at 7:23:13AM:

I had the same issue, I would reinstall and reinstall to no avail. Then I
noticed in the WSUS report that this update was listed TWICE. Further
investigation found that one of them was superseded and needed to be
declined. Once I did that, it removed itself from the list of updates
waiting to be installed and the next day the update was not waiting to be
installed on the Exchange servers. The superceding update was approved and
installed successfully. Everything is working just fine now.
