Did you create an autodiscover record in your public zone? Such as:
autodiscover.yourexternaldomainname.com
Did you purchase a UNC/SAN cert with this name as one of the names in the cert? This is important for outside clients using Outlook Anywhere (previously known as RPC/HTTPS).
Have you checked with the following site if your Outlook Anywhere and other Exchange 2007 functions work from the outside world? (Note - This is a Microsoft testing tool that is valuable in determine configuration errors).
Microsoft Exchange Server Remote Connectivity AnalyzerMicrosoft Exchange Web Services Connectivity Tests. ActiveSync Provider AutoDiscover ... etc...

If you haven't purchased a UNC/SAN cert, and not sure how to go about it, check with the following link that shows you exactly how. I like this site, and have purchased a few certs from them for my customers. I usually add the following names to the cert in the wizard, which helps you create a cert request command to run in the Exchange 2007 command shell.
mail.PublicDomainName.com
autodiscover.PublicDomainName.com
exchServerInternalNetBIOSname.internalADdomainName .net
exchServerInternalNetBIOSname

Once this is all setup and working, I've found everything works nicely, including Outlook Anywhere, OOF, availability service and F/B service. I have customers with remote laptops that are both joined to the domain and not joined to the domain, that have no problems configuring an Outlook Anywhere profile using Outlook 2007 (which does it automatically) or using Outlook 2003, including through firewalls and behind Proxies at their locations. It just works...
