How to exclude a particular update?

I have this problem when the update automatically loads and installs, then
the machine malfunctions. I have to roll back every time. How do I manually
exclude a particular update from being pulled? It's a chipset video driver
that corrupts the XP Pro SP2 machine. I guess it takes only the vendor
specific package.

Anyone knows? Registry edit? Some tool? Appreciate your help.

Howdy, Max.

You'll have to experiment with settings (your settings) at the Windows update site.
It may be a little tricky & somewhat counter-intuitive, but it should get what you want.

1. Begin Windows Update from Win menus.
2. When it gets to the site, and it displays Express and Custom options, select "Custom".

It will start scanning & then show some summaries.

3. You will see some display lines at right.
Pay attention to right-side and see what's listed under each "category" .. (You can select by Type of update or by product).

In your case it's a driver. That is very likely listed under "Hardware, Optional".

Click on that line.

Find the 1 item you want to ignore.
On that line -- click to *un-check* it.

That should do the trick. HTH

A quite similar thing can be done for Automatic updates -- as long as, you have not selected it to install automatically.

When Automatic Updates shield shows up, click it so it comes to the foreground. You may need to click it once more--- if it minimizes to the tray.

Always choose custom, imho. Then when a list of items is presented, un-check the one you do not want.

Hello, Maurice

I know this much about doing the Custom Update manually. The issue is,
however, with the Automatic update that pulls the video driver by itself.
From my experience, all hardware-related stuff should not be critical and
loaded automatically, but this Intel graphics driver somehow comes through.
Is there a way to disable this particular driver or a category of drivers
(i.e., video)?

You should configure Automatic Updates to "Download updates for me, but let
me choose when to install them".

Then, when you get the yellow shield and a popup announcing that updates are
ready to install, go to the Microsoft Update web sitem and select the Custom
route as previously described. All the Critical Updates pending will be
listed, and you can choose to install them, not install them, or mark them
as to be ignored for ever.
