exe, reg files not working in vista

I have association problems with exe, reg (and maybe other) file extentions.
Error message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Assocations control panel."

This creates a vicious circle trying to run fixes becuase they mostly
involve reg or exe files (I can run many exe files as admininstrator). Have
folllowed several threads, including the Doug Knox utilities, but I can't run
those because they are reg files. Have gone into Regedit via Safe mode and
messed with exe as per suggestions in other threads - no luck. A scan found
a prockill-bu file, which I deleted.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you " can run many exe files as administrator "
then run your " fixes " as administrator.

These two articles discuss two ways to fix file associations in Vista (From
Ramesh Srinivasan, winhelponline).

Thanks for the info, but I can't use these fixes because the Merge command
doesn't recognize a reg file. (Its kind of strange that a fix for a reg file
association actually uses a reg file.) Is there another way to do the Merge?

What program does Merge run? I might be able to specify the program
manually.

Vista runs .exe and .reg (Merge) files. Consider your Repair Vista Options.
