Cannot export mailbox to user.pst from Exchange 5.5/NT4 to SBS2003.

Downloaded ExMerge, copied exmerge.exe and exmerge.ini to 'C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin\ on the SBS2003.

Ran ExMerge.exe according to the instructions.

The ExMerge Log:

As of the "[11:35:04] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)"...could that be the fault which causes the effect not being able to export to pst?

I read in the Knowledge Base-artikel - 830624 (http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;830624), that the problem could occure if the LDAP port number used by ExMerge is the same LDAP port number used by the Exchange directory to listen for LDAP queries, ExMerge uses port 389, so does the LDAP on the server1. I tried different portnumbers, but it only states that 'The specified server "server1" is inaccessible...bla bla... or the LDAP port specified is incorrect'. I have full access to the Exchange 5.5 as Administrator, so it must be the LDAP thing, I suppose.

Should I manually edit ExMerge.ini or is the fault somewhere else; according to the ExMerge log file?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. thx. Until then, I will go through the ExMerge manual, and take my time to read it better

/Flemming

Permissions can bite you in the ass with exmerge - make another user
with full admin right, and alsmo explicitly enable all rights on the
infomation store (somewhere in the properties)

the default administrator account WONT work.

Hi

You need to use 2 versions of exmerge. They should both be on the CD that
came with your install of exchange. Use the old version of exmerge to
export and the new version to import.

Trust that helps

Not true anymore.
The latest Exmerge supports <all> versions of Exchange
from 5.0 forward. When you first launch the app, read the
introductory text and it'll be stated. I've also used it
and verified it works fine for Exch5.5.

I don't think that the problem is an LDAP port error, but
I do find it possibly noteworthy that your app couldn't
find your Exchange by whatever you configured at first
(Mabe you pointed to the Domain and not the Server by
name? Recommend you browse to your Server instead).

If I were to guess, it's a permissions thing. How are you
logged onto your Server? With that account, can you open
the M drive and inspect this mailbox' contents? Maybe even
open Outlook and try to access this mailbox?

And, did you do a repair on this database? If you did,
then there is no guarantee the database is absolutely
without problem which is why it's always recommended to
never use a repaired database.

I hope this helps you guys:

My trials and tribulations with exmerge.exe

An Exchange Disaster Recovery Story

I recently had reason to use exmerge.exe, and like many of you, I seemed to
encounter virtually every problem that I managed to find in the newsgroups,
but with very little concrete help in solving them other than someone
regurgitating what I had already seen and tried unsuccessfully from the
Microsoft Knowledgebase. I hope to give you definitive steps here to help
make it work easily for you. I will also go through the steps for recovering
Exchange as this might also be helpful to some of you.

I recently had a client with a server that went down:with bad back-up tapes
to boot. I managed to use File Scavenger 2.1 to retrieve virtually all the
files, including priv.edb, from the otherwise unreadable drive and go from
there. I started with a Windows NT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5 SP4 environment, and
decided to go to a Windows 2003 with Exchange 2003 environment.

First I installed a new drive in the old server and reloaded Windows NT4.
Because I didn't have access to the old registry, and I didn't know the name
of the organization and site, I followed the instructions in Knowledgebase
article Q155509 so I could successfully reinstall Exchange. After retrieving
the name of the organization and site, I installed Exchange 5.5 again and
service pack 4 (don't forget this step to your former SP level). From the
exchsrvr\mdbdata directory, I deleted all the files but pub.edb (delete this
too if you have a pub.edb with data in it that you want to recover and
follow all the directions for priv.edb on pub.edb too) and copied my old
priv.edb to the \mdbdata directory. Make sure you have a copy of any
priv.edb and pub.edb you plan to work on, preferably right on the drive. To
get the information store to run I followed the directions in Q272570. If
your Information store is really goofed up, you might look at Q219419.
Hopefully you now have exchange up and running.

I could now go into the Exchange Administrator and see the mailboxes in
Private Information Store>Mailbox Resources, but the accounts associated
with them were no longer in existence since the SAM was gone. If your SAM is
fine, your accounts in Mailbox Resources exist, and you have mailboxes under
Recipients (or wherever you had them), you may not need to do the following:
I also had to run the DS/IS Consistency Checker since I had no mailboxes
under Recipients (i.e. no directory objects). Highlight your "Server_Name",
and go to Properties>Advanced tab. Check "Synchronize with the directory:"
and "Remove unknown user accounts from mailbox permissions" for the
Information Store and for the Public Information Store if you are restoring
that one too. I also would use "All inconsistencies" from the filter below.
After running this, the mailboxes should show up, and in Mailbox Resources
all resources should now be owned by Administrator (I found that this took a
while though:try rebooting if it doesn't show Administrator as the owner).

You can now check everything by configuring the mail client (Use the
Microsoft Messaging client that comes with NT4 in Control Panel>Add/Remove
programs, but we will get back to this point later) on the local server and
test that you can open your mail. If you can, this is a good sign of
progress.

To extract the data from Exchange 5.5, I used the old version of exmerge.exe
that could be found in the BackOffice Resource Kit, Second Edition:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/abo...t/na/cd28.mspx .
If you are exporting from Exchange 2000 or 2003, find the matching version
of exmerge.exe for your Exchange version. Exmerge.exe for Exchange 2003 is
on the Microsoft site under downloads. I read somewhere that the newer
version might work on Exchange 5.5 also, but I know the old one does, so why
bother? When you run exmerge.exe, at this point many of you are getting a
log that looks something like this:

LOG[09:23:52] Initializing worker thread (Thread0)[09:23:52] Copying data
from mailbox 'User Name' ('USER') on Server 'SERVER' to file
'E:\EXMERGEDATA\USER.PST'.[09:23:53] Error opening message store (MSEMS).
Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and
that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)[09:23:53]
Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox 'User Name'
('USER').[09:23:53] Number of items copied from the source store for all
mailboxes processed: 0[09:23:53] Total number of folders processed in the
source store: 0[09:23:53] 0 mailboxes successfully processed. 1 mailboxes
were not successfully processed. 0 non-fatal errors encountered.[09:23:53]
Process completion time: 00:00:00

Chances are that you are using Outlook 2000 or greater. You need to use the
Microsoft Messaging client that comes with NT4 (I suspect Outlook 97 would
work because it used MAPI the same way as Windows Messaging client, but
again why bother?). At this point, you were probably successful exporting to
..pst files. If you exporting from Exchange 2000 or 2003, I highly suggest
that you log in as a different administrative user from the one used for
Exchange, and give that user all rights within the Exchange hierarchy.
Q292509 describes that you need to add the "Send as" and "Receive as"
permissions, but when I looked they were already there and it didn't work,
thus use the new user way to avoid any problems.

Importing to Exchange2003 (probably Exchange 2000 also) is exactly the same
as what I described above for exporting from Exchange 2000/2003: Log in as a
different administrative user from the one used for Exchange, and give that
user all rights within the Exchange hierarchy. You should be able to now
successfully import your .pst files.

I hope this has helped some of you.

P.S. Any comments on procedure and how to do this better are welcome at
. Any success stories too. J
